The release from the Food and Drug Administration begins with the name of the company:

EnShiShiXiangNiShangMaoYouXianGongSisy

Yes, that is apparently the name.

That company, according to a news release from the FDA, is "voluntarily recalling one lot of ENDURANCE BOOST WITH HORNY GOAT WEED (20 Count)External Link Disclaimer capsules to the consumer level."

A regular sampling showed the horny goat weed capsules was tainted with:

  • Propoxyphenylsildenafil (a sildenafil analogue)
  • Sildenafil

According to the recall statement, "sildenafil is an ingredient in FDA approved products for treatment of male erectile dysfunction in the family of drugs known as phosphodiesterase (PDE-5) inhibitors. Products containing sildenafil cannot be marketed as dietary supplements."

What is propoxyphenylsildenafil? The FDA release did not explain completely. A Google search leads here.

The product with its all capital letters – ENDURANCE BOOST WITH HORNY GOAT WEED – is "an unapproved new drug for which safety and efficacy have not been established and, therefore, subject to recall."

Risks come with taking horny goat weed especially with interaction with other drugs like nitroglycerin.

The consumption of capsules may cause a significant drop in blood pressure that may be life threatening.

The FDA warns: "People with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease often take nitrates. Among the adult male population, who are most likely to use this product, adult males who use nitrates for cardiac conditions are most at risk."

As of April 30, 2025, the company EnShiShiXiangNiShangMaoYouXianGongSi has not received any reports of adverse events related to this recall.
