Arkansas History Notecard: Bill Clinton, Circa 1990
Kissing babies, campaigning Clinton style, gearing up for a presidential run
[Editor's Note: We've decided to make Arkansas History Notecard a permanent feature on South Arkansas Reckoning. Most of these will feature places and people in South Arkansas. Occasionally, they will feature interesting discoveries.]
When you come across footage of Bill Clinton that captures a moment in time, you just have to share it.
This video shows then-Gov. Bill Clinton in August 1990 at an unnamed event on the grounds of Arkansas Children's Hospital.
Starched khaki suit and white shirt, perfect tie, it's Bill in classic campaigner mode. (I know because I covered this era of Clinton while in college.)
Funny and friendly, Clinton — or as my former editor Paul Bedard at US News called him “Bubba” — was the consummate campaigner, mastering the art of kissing babies and wooing mamas.
Whether you love or loath Clinton, this footage is old school Bill, the king of retail politicking, that led him from small afternoon events under tents in hospital parking lots to holding the most powerful position in the world for eight years.
