The Sheridan School Board voted unanimously Monday night to hire Kevin Kelley as the Yellowjackets head football coach.
Listen to the Sheridan School Board's announcement about Kelley and the vote to hire him at the December regular school board meeting.
According to the agenda posted on the school district’s website under “state required information,” Kelley's name was not mentioned although “personnel” was. His hiring was announced by Jeff Lisenbey, school board president, at the end of the meeting after retirements and resignations.
Parents and community members have contacted South Arkansas Reckoning specifically asking how much Kelley will be paid. The school board did not discuss Kelley’s salary in the board meeting.
Tyler Turner, the Yellowjackets former head football coach, was listed on the agenda under “Department Reports.”
The board voted to accept Turner's resignation Monday night, according to the audio.
Turner recently accepted a head football coaching job at Goodpasture Christian School in Nashville, Tenn., where he coached previously. Hired as the Yellowjackets coach in June, Turner earned $111,121.64 as a 240-day employee as head coach and athletic director in a full-time position, according to the state required information on the school’s website.
Under Turner, the Yellowjackets ended with a 3-6 season.
McBroom emerged from semi-retirement in 2020 to coach the Yellowjackets. In the 2022-23 school year, McBroom’s salary was $56,274.01 as “head coach / teacher 240” and was classified as part-time, according to state required information on the school’s website.
In McBroom’s last year, the Sheridan School District replaced turf and erected a new score board for the 2022-23 football season. Read more below:
McBroom’s overall record was 7-25 for three Yellowjacket seasons.
A High School Football Legend
Kelley coached the Pulaski Academy Bruins from 2003-2020 where he compiled a 216-29-1, according to a press release on the Sheridan School District's website.
Pulaski Academy, a private school, won nine state titles under Kelley. Kelley was inducted into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame in 2021.
After leaving Pulaski Academy, Kelley spent a season at Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina, and left with a 2-9 record.
Kelley did not attend Monday night’s board meeting in Sheridan.
He, along with Adam DePriest, a long-time coaching assistant for Kelley, attended Tuesday night's Yellowjackets basketball game against the Pine Bluff Zebras.
Kelley was introduced to the crowd by school board member Wade Crosswhite, according to a post on the school's Facebook page. A reception for Kelley occurred after the basketball games at the school.
The board, according to the audio at the top of this story, did not mention DePriest by name at Monday's meeting. However, the board voted to hire an unnamed assistant coach.
South Arkansas Reckoning sent the following request to Superintendent Karla Neathery.
Andy Mayberry, former state representative and now the school’s communications director, responded with the following answers.
With no contract, it's unclear what the district will pay Kelley.
