I was flying to the Democratic Convention in Los Angeles with a bunch of donkey-hat wearing Arkansans.
Paul Bedard, my editor back then at U.S. News and World Report, assigned me to cover Bill Clinton's swan song from the White House and Al Gore's nomination at the convention. I wrote weekly for Bedard's “Washington Whispers” column and my main focus was “Bubba” as he called — and still does — Bill Clinton.
