It’s not uncommon to drop a five dollar bill on a breakfast biscuit, and it’s convenient.
But have you done the math on it lately?
A family of four can easily spend $100+ a week or more just grabbing breakfast as we start our day.
Have you ever made biscuits?
There are so many biscuit recipes out there. They all work well. I personally use the recipe below:
3 cups all-purpose flour
Half a stick unsalted butter, grated
3 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons salt
Roughly a cup and a half of 7Up, Sprite or your favorite lemon/lime soft drink
I’ll give you a quick run down.
Grate the butter into a mixing bowl.
Add the flour, salt and baking powder.
Work the butter into the mixture with your hand.
I like to start off adding in one cup of 7Up and start mixing it together. I’ll add a little more until the mixture barely starts to stick to my fingers. Why 7Up? I don’t drink buttermilk, and 7Up can stay on the shelf for days and still be ready to go if I need it.
Spread your dough out. Grab a coffee cup and start cutting out ¾-inch thick biscuits until you are done — usually 11 or 12 biscuits are the result.
Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees and slide them in.
You’re looking for firmness, not necessarily a brown top. You can get that by applying butter to the tops and turning on the broiler for 60 seconds at the end.
Don’t over think it. They are biscuits, and you’ll be surprised to see how easy it is to make them.
Biscuit prep time is roughly 30 minutes.
You can increase the mixture and place the dough on parchment paper. Freeze them so you can grab what you need during the week.
You can buy frozen biscuits, but why not do it yourself? Just cut out the biscuits and freeze them. You can do as many as you think you need.
A bag of flour in the grocery store comes in just under $4. I personally like Gold brand unbleached all purpose flour. Around here we prefer turkey bacon and most stores sell it pre-cooked. It's convenient, and typically costs around $4, probably not real healthy but who knows what we’re really eating anyway? Being Americans, we like American cheese on our breakfast biscuits.
We have our own flock of Rhode Island Red chickens so eggs around here aren’t hard to come by. Two scrambled eggs will be more than enough egg for FOUR bacon egg and cheese biscuits.
In today’s economy, going back to meal prepping and actually knowing what you’re consuming is making a huge comeback.
I love to cook from scratch as Mom would have said. It’s just something I have always enjoyed.
In today’s world, every child should probably get their hands in some dough and make a few biscuits before this busy world consumes them into the daily grind of chasing a dollar. Then spending it on fast food.
Maybe this will inspire someone to take a break from the rat race and introduce themselves and their kids to something so simple as making a few biscuits.
Who knows? As the economy continues to spiral, maybe learning how to prepare dough and remembering the value of salt and sugar will make a come back, too.
Those squirrels you watch in the yard used to be on everyone's menu throughout the South. The same recipe above minus the baking powder makes great dumplings. And trust me, a couple squirrels, a little salt and pepper with some homemade dumplings is as fine a meal as you’ll ever sit down to enjoy.

I use Bisquick, for 6-8 biscuits, 3 cups of Bisquick, 1/2 cup of sour cream and 1/2 cup of sprite, 7 up or gingerale. If you need 12 biscuits just double everything, you can roll and cut or spoon drop them. I use an ice cream scoop. For the small batch, melt a half stick of butter in the pan you are going to cook your biscuits in if you go with the larger batch use one stick. 350°, for about 15 minutes or until the tops are browning!
These are the kind of happy stories I like.
