Are politicians brave enough to face their constituents?
Kick Start Sheridan is hosting a Rock the Vote event Aug. 31 where folks can meet candidates to discuss important issues.
Once upon a time before the internet, influencers and, even television, retail politics was what got a candidate votes.
Bill Clinton was the master of Arkansas retail politics, visiting every county event, festival, volunteer suppers, and diners in the state. Nothing was too small for Clinton to make an appearance. If he was running these days, no doubt he would make an appearance at this upcoming Grant County event.
These days, candidates — even at a local and state level — rely on social media to engage voters. Maybe too much. Sometimes, a voter just wants to see the person asking for their vote and see for themselves who's the person on the billboard or website.
The upcoming event at the Grant County Courthouse on Sheridan's quaint town square offers candidates the opportunity to give an old-fashioned stump speech. There will also be a platform for speakers to discuss ballot issues.
“We created the artwork for the event and even attempted to put some feelers out to see if it was something that the community could support,” Justin Wise, co-chair for Kick Start Sheridan, said.
Wise has served with the organization since its inception and most recently as chair for the “recreation and things to do” committee.
“The idea stems back to the days when many college campuses would host music and registration events,” Wise said.
Not registered to vote yet for this November? Get Loud Arkansas will be on hand to help get you registered.
Candidates will be provided a free 10x10 booth area and are encouraged to bring their own pop-up canopy, chairs, table, and campaign swag. The event is free for candidates and attendees.
“At some point, the event became known as Rock the Vote,” Wise said. “Candidates are given a platform to share their ideas on important issues and topics while listening and discussing these with their constituents. With only a few local races this election cycle, we're trying to ramp up interest in discussing the issues that'll be on the ballot for voters to discuss and decide.”
Any opposed and unopposed candidate interested in participating in the event should contact or inbox Kick Start Sheridan on Facebook or call/text: 501-786-9915.
