We Protect Our Sources
A true inside look at our independent journalism
Every investigation starts with a lead or institutional knowledge.
We have received several leads over the last few weeks, and we are checking into each one. By that, we mean we have to start by retrieving documents, checking with sources and conducting interviews. It’s not usually a fast-paced scenario. To get the facts and report them accurately takes time.
Investigations typically evolve from the original tip or lead. That evolution determines if it’s newsworthy or not. It’s just the way that it is.
What investigative journalism isn't?
We do not throw a bunch of documents together on social media with zero context and call it news. That's clickbait to stir controversy and gain attention. Most of the time, those controversial theories evaporate quickly.
Our investigations take time and are often complex. Remember, we don't have a staff. We also have zero grant, corporate or advertising dollars funding our brand of journalism. That's why we need your support.
When a government entity fails to provide the facts that are needed, the only recourse to get the facts is to file a lawsuit to get the answers. That's just one more reason why paid subscriptions are a must. We want you to understand that component of what we do. It truly does take money to shed a light on the situations that are otherwise hidden.
Let's face it. If someone has done something wrong, they don't want anyone to know. That's why solid tips, reliable sources and financial backing are a must in our line of business.
We designed our platform to be completely independent with no one's thumb on us. We do not tell a story to please an editor or advertiser. We intentionally avoided that from day one. We follow the facts — only.
We want you all to know, stories can’t always be focused on corruption. Although that’s at the heart of our mission, we're also looking for story ideas about the great things happening in your communities, too! Is there a new mom-and-pop restaurant opening in your town? How about a neighbor with an incredible talent, or a student athlete making a difference in his or her community? We know those stories are out there. Drop us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We will do our best to cover them.
We wanted to take the time to give our readers a behind-the-scenes snapshot of how we operate as well as give you each a thank you for subscribing to our site.
Remember we are paid solely through paid subscriptions. If you haven’t upgraded to a paid subscription, please do so when you can.
We realize you may not be able to do $8 every month, but any month helps. It’s our goal to keep all of our content open for everyone with no stories behind a paywall.
Once again, thanks!
